Dervish is a member of a Muslim ascetic order, mainly the Sufis. They are known for performing whirling dances as acts of ecstatic devotion. The sculpture depicts such a dance performed within the Sema, or physically active worship ceremony, through which dervishes aim to reach the source of all perfection and the divine energy.
